Character Information
Character Name: Jay Garrick | The Flash
Fandom: Earth 2 (DC Comics – The New 52)

Character History:
The DC Universe is comprised of multiple universes, one of which houses the Earth designated as Earth 2. A parallel world to the one that most are familiar with, Earth 2 has a slightly different history than its more well-known counterpart, Earth Prime. A world where magic reigned and Wonder Woman was the first hero to appear on the scene, Earth 2's heroes are called Wonders instead of superheroes. Unlike their Earth Prime counterparts Earth 2's heroes have their origins mired in magic and mysticism for the most part, instead of science.

Five years before Jay Garrick's story starts, Earth 2 was attacked by Darkseid, an evil ruler from the fiery planet Apokolips. Darkseid's chief lieutenant, Steppenwolf, succeeded in laying waste to a good deal of Earth 2 and getting rid of their top heroes - Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. The planet never really recovered from the attack, and for five years, Earth 2 remained without any Wonders to protect it from further attack. Even the Olympian god Mercury had been kidnapped. Satisfied with his victory, Steppenwolf remained on Earth 2 and took over the country of Dherain, which is indicated to be somewhere in the Middle East.

In the five years since Steppenwolf's victory, Earth 2 started a slow and careful rebuilding of its world. An organization called the World Army came together to protect the world from further metahuman threats.

Soon, things started to pick up on Earth 2. A new Age of Wonders would begin as various inhabitants would find themselves blessed or gifted with power. A professonial treasure hunter named Kendra Munoz-Saunders would find herself cursed with wings when a tomb raid went awry. She would take on the name Hawkgirl. Her friend and partner Khalid Ben-Hassin would also come across the mystical Helmet of Fate during the same raid, and find himself gifted with the the knowledge an power of an ancient sorcerer named Nabu, whose spirit still resided within the golden helm. He would take on the name Dr. Fate. A man named Alan Scott would find himself as an Avatar of the Green - the mystical entity that connects all organic life on Earth. To protect Earth, he would take on the name Green Lantern. Al Pratt, a captain in the World Army with past ties to Kendra, would become the Atom, with the power to change size and wield atomic energy.

Mercury, the Olympian god of speed, freed himself from his captors - people far worse than the Apokoliptian army that had nearly destroyed Earth 2 five years earlier. He landed in Lansing, Michigan, mortally wounded and on the verge of death. This was where he came across Jay Garrick, a troubled college graduate whose life had seemed to have come to a complete standstill. Jay had been at a very low point in his life. He had barely managed to graduate from college, his girlfriend Joan had broken up with him and moved on to a better life somewhere else, and Jay was living at home with his mother again. Though he was a fun person, he wasn't going anywhere. Well, except to investigate the mysterious crash he had just witnessed happening.

Jay found Mercury, who quickly warned him that the world needed a new age of heroes to protect it from a threat far worse than the one that Apokolips had posed. Seeing a greatness in Jay that Jay himself couldn't see, Mercury imbued Jay with his power, warning him to trust no one. Shocked - and transformed - Jay fled the scene as the police arrived. Testing out his new powers, Jay raced halfway across the world before coming across Hawkgirl. There, he discovered that she had been waiting for him. Mysteriously, she told him that fate had asked her to meet him here. Jay, not understanding. didn't realize that Hawkgirl meant Dr. Fate.

Jay teamed up with Hawkgirl then to fight a force that was taking over the planet. Called the Grey, it was the opposite of the Green, aiming to destroy what the Green grew and protected. Much like Alan Scott, the Green Lantern, was an Avatar for the Green, the Grey had its own avatar, named Solomon Grundy. Together with Green Lantern and the Atom, Jay and Hawkgirl managed to stop Grundy's threat.

Though he had managed to save the day, by virtue of being one of Earth 2's new Wonders - and due to his association with Hawkgirl - Jay was considered an enemy of the World Army. team of soldiers comprising of the Atom – who Jay had just worked alongside – and many others were sent to Jay’s mother’s home to apprehend him. They managed to escape with the help of Khalid Ben-Hassin - Dr. Fate. Their safety would remain short-lived, though, as Jay, Mrs. Garrick, and Khalid were transported into another dimension by a magical being named Wotan - a former enemy of Nabu who wanted the Helm of Fate for himself. Khalid had given up the Helm of Fate earlier, scared by Nabu's power, but he was the only one who would be able to find it again, having once possessed it. Wotan threatens to kill Jay’s mother if he does not assist Khalid in finding the Helm of Fate. Together, Khalid and Jay ventured into a strange tower, Jay using his abilities to deal with its beastly guardian while Khalid searched for the mystical helm. Khalid chose to take the power of Fate for himself, and they fought Wotan, bringing him back to their dimension. With the help of Green Lantern, Jay and Khalid were able to defeat Wotan. From there, they went to Green Lantern’s home to hide out for a while, as the World Army was still after them.

While at Green Lantern’s home, they discover that there is going to be an impending war with the nation of Dherain, because of Steppenwolf. Jay and the other Wonders infiltrated Dherain, and that first battle went very well, but Steppenwolf turned the tide of the battle by releasing a group of stronger enemies called Hunger Dogs for the Wonders to fight. In the resulting battle, Jay is shot in the shoulder by a possessed teammate. Healed of his injuries by Dr. Fate, instead of heading off to fight Steppenwolf, Jay has Dr. Fate open up another portal so that Jay can work towards bringing injured soldiers to safety.

Soon afterwards, it is revealed that Superman is alive and unwell. Rather, alive and evil. Working with a trio of villains, Superman takes Jay hostage. One named Beguiler tortures him, amazed by how quickly Jay can heal himself, thanks to the powers granted to him by Mercury. She wouldn't kill him, though, because Superman said to keep Jay alive for Darkseid. Jay is eventually saved by Hawkgirl, and they escape, only to have Beguiler follow them. Jay gets into a fight with Beguiler and runs faster than he ever has before while holding someone. She then disappears, and Jay believes that he pushed her into another plane of existence. They also defeat Superman who, it turns out, was a clone of the real thing.

Finally, the whole team of heroes on Earth 2 had come together, and that's when things went from bad to worse because Darkseid was released, and they had to fight him. Beaten badly, things seem to be at their worst when a flash of light transports Jay and his team to another planet.

Jay and the other Wonders discover that they were brought to this planet by a man named Telos. Telos was a man created by a villain named Brainiac to watch over stolen cities from all the various Earths in the DC Multiverse. Brainiac disappeared for awhile, and in the wake of Brainiac's absence, Telos came to the conclusion that since Brainiac is unique, Telos himself must be unique as well. As all of the Earths were not quite as unique, Telos decided to have the various inhabitants of the various stolen cities fight each other, until only one Earth was the victor. Jay and the Wonders, having lost their Earth to Darkseid, had no Earth of their own to fight for, and as such were free agents and wild cards in the battle, fighting Telos instead of being pitted against other heroes from different Earths.

Jay and the Wonders were able to fight Telos and free him from Brainiac's control. By doing so, they also ended up saving the Multiverse at large. All of the stolen cities were freed, and the DC Multiverse became a safe, stable place. As a reward for their help, Jay and the Wonders were given a duplicate Earth - a new Earth 2 - to start their lives over again on.

Character Personality:

A recent college graduate and former party boy, it's been hinted that up until recently, Jay was an underachiever. He only barely passed college, and while he was fun to hang out with, it was clear that he had no plans, that he was going nowhere in his life. He'd disappear for days at a time to party. That was the old Jay. Since being imbued with powers by Mercury, Jay has changed a little bit - grown up and taken on some responsibility. Being imbued with the power of a god, and being tasked with saving the world from darkness gave Jay a purpose that he so sorely lacked, and so he embraced the role of a hero quickly. The truth of the matter is that Jay does love being a hero, and he loves being able to help and save people. Whenever there is danger afoot, he doesn't hesitate before rushing in to do what he can to defuse the situation and save the day.

As speedsters tend to do, Jay has started to believe that he's untouchable. He knows he has some vulnerability, of course, but since there are few people that can actually keep pace with him, he's certain of his ability to beat the villain down, or be able to outpace them into losing somehow. At the same time, though, he's also pragmatic enough to know when a fight is out of his hands. Time and again, Jay has proven that he's a hero not for the glory of it but because it's the right thing to do. Many heroes, when gifted with powers, would rush out to become known as the person who always manages to beat down the villain. Jay, though, has sometimes opted to be the one to pull innocent bystanders or harmed comrades to safety while his other team members work on fighting whatever big bad it is they're facing that day, because he understands that saving the day doesn't always mean facing down the bad guy with fisticuffs.

Jay is an incredibly open, inviting, light-hearted person. Even when Joan was breaking up with him, Jay still remained open and friendly towards her, despite her tearing him and his lack of direction down. He isn't a fan of hurting the feelings of those he cares about, and tends to feel that friendships can happen despite differences between personalities. It's this attitude of his that doesn't give up on the hope that Green Lantern will become a friend and a teammate, even though he brush Jay and Hawkgirl off after their first meeting. Jay's nothing if not a team-player.

Like most speedsters, Jay tends to be a mouthy, lippy, quippy person. Unlike most speedsters, this isn't Jay's mouth running before his brain can catch up. It's a calculated move to piss his opponents off so that he can trick them into getting the upper hand - or at the very least, so that he can distract them. When he was kidnapped by the Beguiler, Jay ran his mouth off to distract her from torturing him. He's done the same with other villains too, knowing that it works well as a distraction technique. It's also something he does to put himself in harm's way to save the lives of others. He knows that he can get away quickly from his opponent, so by distracting them, he draws their ire so that others who aren't as quick can get away or regroup.

Powers and Abilities:

Superspeed: Mystically gifted with all of the Olympian god Mercury's powers, Jay Garrick is a super-speedster who can run fast enough to break the sound barrier. He has been shown to be able to reach speeds fast enough to push people into other dimensions, but for the sake of the game and the setting, he won't be able to reach that sort of speed in Nautilus. (There will be some mental blocks in regards to how much exactly he will be able to bend to get his powers, and this is one of them.)

Super Healing:One of the powers that Jay also received, in addition to his speed, is the ability to heal quickly. Though vulnerable, he is a highly durable individual, and he tends to heal quickly. Any normal wear and tear damage to his body is usually almost instantly healed. This will probably be one of the easier things that he learns to bend - fixing a scratch or something. Broken bones will be another matter altogether.

Increased Perceptions: Because Jay travels at the speed of sound as the Flash, he could miss important events as he runs by. Mercury's gift grants them enhanced senses that allows him to see, hear, smell, touch and/or taste at an increased speed and understand it as it is processed.
Phasing: Mercury's gift allows him to vibrate his molecules so quickly that he can achieve intangibility for short bursts allowing him to phase through objects. This will be another work in progress with him.

Sharing the power: Jay can allow his friends or family members to run along side him at his equaled speeds. This power is going to take him a very long time to learn.

Speed Aura - Because of Mercury's gift, Jay can survive the harsh conditions associated with mach speeds. When Jay must rescue an individual from a dangerous situation, this individual will be protected while within the aura. He will have to learn to use this ability in conjunction with his speed if he wants to save people and not hurt them.
Steal Speed: Mercury's gift allows Jay to steal the accelerated motion or momentum from objects or people to reduce their speed or even virtually stop them.

Supercharged Brain Activity: Sometimes neglected by Speedsters who only operate at superhuman speeds and never slow down enough to understand their full potential; Speedsters can access superhuman levels in their brains further than processing information. They can test theories, understand difficult equations and run trial and error in their brains at superhuman speeds. Different conduits access this activity in different ways. There will be a huge block with Jay in regards to this. He's never been good at school or learning, and I'd rather not have him become a genius overnight. The potential is there, but that's it.

Superhuman Stamina: Mercury's gift allows Jay to use his superhuman speed and react at superhuman speeds; being able to run for extended periods of time at great distances. . Their bodies can handle the stresses of superhuman racing without noticeable distress.

Subconcious Suit: As part of his gift by Mercury, Jay can mystically call upon his Flash uniform to dress him whenever he needs to become the Flash. It also disappears at his will, being replaced by his civilian clothes. This will be one of the very first things he learns, as it'll presumably be easier than learning his other powers on his own.

[The feed crackles to life and shows Jay Garrick staring thoughtfully into the camera for a long, silent moment.] I can't actually decide if I want to do a video journal or not. I mean, I've never done a journal before, but maybe it'll help me stay focused? I can't lose focus, you know? I did that once before, and it felt like I was going nowhere.

I don't want to go nowhere again. Nowhere's boring.

But does someone wanna clue me in about this school where I can learn to bend? Because if it's anything like that horrible hot yoga thing that my ex-girlfriend dragged me to that one time, pass. I hope you don't have to take a test to get in, either. I suck at standardized testing.

Also. What's Gothdonald's? I keep on hearing about Death and plushies, and I'm...concerned.

[He's quiet again for a second. Thoughtful. The worry is evident.] If there's any place to grab a beer or something - I mean, I'll buy - but I'd appreciate the direction. I could really use the direction.

Third Person:

C'mon, Garrick. You can do this. Jay stared out at the bright, dusty red track as it stretched out in front of him. He'd been at Nautilus for two weeks now, and since getting settled in, he'd followed the link that Ace had sent him and started attending classes to learn how to bend. He'd learned how to bend a bacon cheeseburger into existence. He'd learned how to bend his Flash uniform into existence. He'd even learned how to bend water into beer. All of that was easy stuff. Simple. Well, simpler once he'd gotten used to it.

Bending his powers back, though? That was difficult. His powers had been a gift to him from the dying god Mercury. It was a different animal from bacon cheeseburgers, wasn't it? Could he give himself that power again?

I have to, though. He sighed and gently kicked the dirt on the track in front of him. There had been a time, not so long ago, when he would have sat on the bleachers, slightly hungover, flirting with his now-ex-girlfriend, watching his friends who were in track and wondering what joy they got out of doing that. It felt so directionless and pointless. Not that I had any direction until I started running, he thought.

And that was his main worry. Here he was on Nautilus, just moments after he and his teammates - his friends - had saved the multiverse from Brainiac, and suddenly, everything was different again. His powers were gone. The one thing that had given his life purpose, direction. Gone.

And if I can't bend them back? Then what? The only thing worse than being that directionless slacker who let everyone down would be to be that person again in an entirely new setting. A setting where maybe people still depended on him to do the right thing.

Taking another deep breath, Jay took up a starting position on the track.

You can do this. You remember what it feels like. The rush of the wind. The ground zooming on past you. The magical lightning that crackled when you ran. You're Jay Garrick. You're the Flash. Mercury found you worthy. He counted down to one and then he took off.

It was slow going at first. Just a jog. But he remembered. He imagined. For a moment, lightning sparked around him as he sped up. It wasn't a full lap before the power ran out, but there it had been. For one second, he'd been the Flash again.

He grinned. Okay. He could do this. He could work at it. He wouldn't slack off.

This time, Jay would earn becoming the Flash.
